MAKIN' BAYCON ISSUE 2:
FRIDAY EVENING

BayCon Surfs the 'Net

BayCon '95 is "on-line" through The Internet Cafe, located in room 341. The Internet Cafe will be open from 10 AM to 2 AM Friday through Sunday (Monday hours to be announced.) We have two Windows machines, one Sun SPARCstation, and one X-terminal available, running on a 128K ISDN link, with telnet and Web access. It's first-come, first-served, so get here early. There are no time limits on use, though if it's busy, and a lot of people are waiting, we ask that you limit your time to fifteen or twenty minutes. Throughout the convention, we will be updating the Web page (http://www.baycon.org/) with pictures of the GoH's, opening ceremonies, and any other info that we think is relevant and/or interesting. If you would like to submit something for inclusion, please drop it off with any of the Internet Cafe staff (Michael Wallis, Matt Seidl, Don Hackler, Rose Carlson.)

As of 2 PM on Friday, we still are not yet connected to the outside world, but we expect to be connected by the time this issue appears. In the meantime, you can come by and look at what we have in way of our Web page.

A Word From the Chairman

Michael Siladi, BayCon '95 Chairman, spoke with Makin' BayCon reporter Barbara Johnson-Haddad earlier today, saying, "I would like to welcome all BayCon attendees and hope that you all have a great time. BayCon looks like it will be better than ever before, this year." Then he grinned and added, "Don't forget to go to the 'Meet the Guests' reception tonight at 8 pm in the Fir/Oak Room. We've planned a number of exciting surprises, so it should be a lot of fun."

Concert Schedule Announced

The Friday evening Concert, starting at 7 pm in the Cedar room, will feature concerts by the following:
  1. Joe Haldeman (GoH)
  2. Jordan Kare (Special Music Guest)
  3. Mid-Life Crisis
  4. Jim Burrill and Friends
  5. Heather Alexander
  6. Annwn
  7. Howard Harrison (appearance by arrangeÐment with Michael Wallis)
  8. Members of Avalon Rising
  9. Jeff and Maya Bohnhoff

Tonight's Parties

Remember that "open parties" are restricted to the second and third floors, and that BayCon reserves the right to limit admission to the party floors to people with BayCon memberships or Red Lion room keys. BayCon asks party hosts to call the FLARE troubleshooters at extension 4286 if you have any difficulties or emergencies.

Dueling Punctuation

@! Party, Room 251, time TBA. Once upon a time, @! parties were limited to people with Internet addresses. The newsletter speculates that so many people have Internet addresses now that @! parties should now be limited to only those people who know the proper pronunciation of "@!".

It's About #@%$*! Time Party, Room 253, 9 PM-?, featuring chocolate chip cookies, chili, scones, pastries, and salsa. Well, actually, their flyer said "pasties" not "pastries," but I guess you'll have to go and find out for yourself.

Registration Hours Update

With a frightening display of organization, Amy Neer, Todd Allis, Tomoko Shintani and the rest of the 'Registration Weasels' had the preregistration badges neatly alphabetized and pinned on sheets of cardstock when Registration opened at noon, Friday.

They apologized for the Progress Report listing Registration as opening at 9 am today and gamely explained the misprint to the hordes of fans who showed up early.

Best quote of the morning (said by Amy Neer): "It's gone. It's done. It's DEAD!" (When she was asked what the problem was, she answered:) "It doesn't matter. It's solved now."

Party to at the Max

Club Max, the "loud" bar here at the Red Lion Hotel, is offering free admission to all members of BayCon this weekend. Wear your BayCon membership badge to get your free admission.

BayCon Badge = Brunch Discount

Regular attendees of BayCon know about the dead-end corridor created by the Red Lion's Sunday Brunch. This year, the Red Lion is offering a $2 discount on the brunch to anyone wearing their BayCon membership badge.

Tip Your Maid

Remember that it is a good idea to leave a tip for your housekeeper every day, rather than leaving a single larger tip on the last day. The housekeepers change shifts and you may have different ones each day. We suggest a tip of $1 per person in the room per day. Remember that when the staff is happy, the con runs better. Also, if you tip generously, the housekeepers are less likely to notice that you decided to bring your sleeping-bag collection with you to the convention and are more likely to provide you with all those extra towels. We also suggest that party hosts tip a minimum of $5Ñmore if the work left for the housekeeper is particularly heavy.

Visit the Con Suite

"Come see our Bar and Grill and Spaceport," Gerry Allen (Con Suite & Insanity Manager) urges. "The Insanity crew is hard at work and this is the place to party 'til you drop."

Con Suite, Room 256 (the Chardonnay Room) MUST be visited if only to see the incredible signboard for the room - which must be seen (or rather, obscene) to be appreciated.

Animal Policy

The BayCon animal policy is that dogs, cats and rabbits must be kept on a 4 foot lead (leash) at all times. No animal should be left unattended. No reptiles or wild animals are permitted. No large animals (with the exception of seeing eye dogs) will be allowed near any of the food-service areas.

Bits and Pieces

  • ... Volunteers are still wanted for BayCon! "Stop by the Gopher Hole, Room 264, and I'll take it from there," says Nino Bristol, BayCon's Volunteer Coordinator.
  • ... Come help celebrate the seventh anniversary of Marion Zimmer Bradley's Fantasy Magazine (and Marion's birthday, too!) in a party to be held in the Con Suite (Chardonnay Room) on Saturday between 1 pm and 3 pm
  • ... Green Room quote: "Lea Williams is the greatest!"
  • ... Convention Services (FLARE) wants it known that 'peacebonding' of weapons is mandatory at BayCon this year. If you have a weapon - or something that LOOKS like a weapon - please come see them on the 2nd floor (in the Boardroom)
  • . ... Quote overheard in the hall: "you're just jealous because you're not in therapy."
  • ... On Monday, the Dealers Room will close at 3 pm, not 4 pm as originally announced
  • . ... Heard in FLARE: "Base units are like prototypes. We're still evolving, being >put to the test and not fire-proof."
  • ... Word is that an article in the San Jose Mercury News on either Sunday or Monday will feature the Ferengi Rules of Acquisition.
