MAKIN' BAYCON ISSUE 3:
SATURDAY MORNING

Meet the Guests

When asked about the BIG surprise (Food! Real Food!) at the Meet the Guests party, Friday night, an off-the-record source said, "Well we advertised that there would be surprises. We learned from the survey last year that fans are interested in food, followed by sex. We could take care of the first category."

The Meet the Guests party was also notable in that BayCon Chairman, Michael Siladi, was seen dressed in a formal suit and tie for the occasion.

Comments heard about the big round crackers at the party: "When did they start making organic Frisbees?" This was immediately followed by the statement, "No, this is a cartridge for the hard crisp drive." Artist GoH Frank Lurz wanted to confess that he was not a fencing master (as was reported last SiliCon). He IS a Provost of Arms and is 2/3 of the way towards being a master, though. Gerald Perkins, standing nearby quipped, "No, he's a master at sitting on the fence."

As the speeches of the night began, Michael Siladi received polite applause in recognition of the lovely board of fare Ñ and then even more enthusiastic applause when the work of BayCon volunteers was lauded. Joe Haldeman, Writer GoH, spoke only a few words (since he had another commitment). He greatly recommended that everyone drift over and visit the filking room and then ran off to perform his own brand of "obscene and anarchistic" filk next door.

Jana Keeler, Fan GoH, then spoke of the costuming programming track at BayCon. Panels will range from how to manage problem hair, to the use of electronics in costuming. She suggested that anyone interested visit the fan table for the Greater Bay Area Costumers Guild and then said she would be in the 'Works in Progress' room, fittingly sewing on a few of her projects.

Frank Lurz, Artist GoH, said (to open his speech), "Is there anyone here who can tell me what the devil I'm doing here?" (A chorus of answers followed, saying, "Having fun!") Frank then spoke on the forces that initially drew him into Fandom and artistic expression.

Party Reviews

By the Secret Mistress of Parties

  • Con Suite - What can be said about a party which had as the favorite party favor a basket of condoms?
  • Room 249 - Silicon Valley in '97 Westercon Bid Party: They had all the essentials at this one: death-by-chocolate brownies, soda, chips, veggies, candy, crackers and - a novelty - popsicles that included the BLUE foodgroup. Party hostess, Judy Mormon says, "Buy a pre-supporting membership and please come to our Sunday party, which will run from 9 pm to noon ... we hope. This time it'll most likely be in the Con Suite."
  • Room 251 - The Coffee Party/@! had a cutthroat game of Scrabble going on (it looked like John Galt was waxing the competition) and various munchies available. It was very crowded in the room, with highly stimulating conversations occurring (or was it just the caffeine?).
  • Room 225 - The Leather Tea Party had the best selection of floggers of any public party room. Members of the Society of Janus were represented here tonight, offering pleasant conversation - along with the chips, dips and leather whips. Animal cookies were also a hit at this party. Mauser wanted it known that he was at BayCon this year. When a giant stuffed frog was carried into the room, it was commented: "If we pull off his legs, we'll eat like kings." Party hostess Laurie Ochsner said, "I've never seen 2 cans of whipped cream disappear so fast before!" Kent Brewster - recovering from a sore throat with generous applications of tea - was advised to stop talking and he shot back, "Stop talking? That's a mechanical solution. I want a quick fix!" Exiting the party, I overheard someone say, "This party is like the British Parliament. There are at least 2 Party Whips."
  • Room 341 - The Internet Cafe: Munchies were to be found among the keyboards here, as were hordes of 'Net-o-philes getting a late-night fix by staring at a monitor screen. There was a box of free software being given away (The Best of Walnut Creek CD-ROM) and it was learned that the 4 computers are each named after a giant in the SF field: Asimov, Clarke, Heinlein and Anderson.
  • Room 253 - The It's About @#%! Time Party (an engagement party for Chris Hill and John Snyder) Contained a good selection of veggies, soda, chocolate, cheese, crackers, scones (but the pasties never made it to the Con). Lee Gold mentioned there would be a filk for LAFA (Los Angeles Filkers Anonymous) on June 10th at her place: 3965 Alla Road, LA CA 90066; phone 310/306-7456. BBQ at 5, filking at 7 pm - and then led the room in a rousing rendition of her new filk "The Bunny Hymn of the Republic" (with the chorus of "kill the rabbit" being a room favorite!). Lee also mentioned that this was the 42nd day in the counting of Omer - yet another case of the pervasiveness of the number 42 in Fandom.
  • Speaking of engagements, Andrew Clark asked Carol Higuchi to marry him in the Red Lion parking lot and she accepted. Getting into the spirit, they announced the engagement at the It's About Time party. Their announcement was greeted by congratulations and when they mentioned the wedding date would be in August of 1996, they were asked if there would be a convention tie-in. Laughter greeted this and they said "not at present, but feel free to send gifts!"

    Shoes Required, Says FLARE

BayCon's troubleshooting squad, known as FLARE, has asked us to remind everyone that you must wear shoes in all of the hotel's public areas except around the pool. We thank you for your cooperation.

Fans to Select Art Show Awards

Laurie Pohl admits that there was a vicious rumor news spread that the Art Show opened a bit late today. "The artists have been wonderful," she said happily. "They're very understanding about our whole situation." Laurie also announced that this year, instead of having the artists vote among themselves for awards, "the FANS will vote for the 1995 BayCon Artist Awards (Amateur and Professional). Ballots will be available Saturday morning. Place voted ballots in the "Vote Now" Fans' Choice day-glo voting box that will be located to the right when you first come in the door." (After worker Samantha Oestreicher commented, "The coffee is very ... hot," Laurie recommended the cookies as being very worthwhile.)
