Saturday Night Party Reviews

By the Secret Mistress of Parties

The evening began as fully-clad swimmers cavorted in the hotel pool (long before the Tully Party began) - and the evening got better.

  • Con Suite/Vulgar Unicorn - Offered a wide selection of music (although the song 'Existential Blues' seemed to sum up the night), as well as chips, candy and 'stuff' to wash it down with. "Don't ask what's in the punch," someone suggested. Damiana (a roving maiden) made the men drool over her grapes and kindly fed some to deserving individuals. Featured dancers, Brian and Amber, slithered about the room after 10 pm. It was noted that after they began dancing that "the Condom Fairy had better make an appearance at this party tonight." On a more serious note, Jorelle wants it known that, "The low-life who took 3 buttons on display here Friday night without asking if they were up for grabs can be less of a low-life if they return the buttons."
  • Room 247 - The Ladyhawke Party celebrating the movie's 10th anniversary offered the finest in massages by Max Rible. Canned soda, chips and vast amounts of popcorn were also available. The vast quantity of popcorn led some attendees to wonder if they could drown in it. Room hostess Terry-Terry tried to 'energize' the crowd (a reference to her 'bunny dance' of Friday night) and declared, "Ladyhawke lives!" Commenting upon the mysterious water jug appearance at her room, she said, "It knocked, it's quiet, so I let it in. I'm not going to feed it after midnight though. It's full already."
  • Room 255 - Atlanta in '98 Worldcon Bid Party - Vol Ranger, party hostess says, "It's a very GEnie-friendly party here. We're going to have a lot of fun." They offered chips, salsa, veggies, dips, candy and punch. The 'caution' ribbons and Marvin-the-Martian tablecloth were special favorites.
  • Room 259 - USS Northern Lights - A Star Trek theme party offered soda, crackers, fresh popcorn with real butter (!) and conversation about how to go about achieving some of our final frontiers.
  • Room 263 - Goldfish Party - Attracted a large crowd of unmoving TV tube worshippers who enjoyed watching episodes of Red Dwarf all night.
  • Room 265 - The Welcome Back Tully Party - Party hostess Maia Sherrill made party attendees feel welcome the whole night long. Tullamore Dew flowed, Sherrill gave away free T-shirts and mugs (always a favorite among fen) and kept things jumping. The room went from full to crowded to packed all night. The crowd was enthusiastic in their appreciation of this Irish liquid treasure. Nick (the official Red Lion Inn bartender) said, "I think BayCon has been great! Everyone's happy to be here." Other comments overheard: "I thought vampires were supposed to be unadulterated spirits!" (said to a lovely trio of vampiresses). "What a nice way to come into town," said Shannon Smith, "I can get a free drink and unwind." While Wilma Meier commented, "It's Tully. It's great!" After quaffing her drink, she added, "The T-shirts are nice, but the glass mugs are better." Everyone agreed at one point in the evening that Tullamore Dew Irish Whiskey is the favored fuel of filkers everywhere.
  • Room 341 - The Internet Cafe was the site for more phosphor worshippers to gather and do homage to large glowing screens. When asked if he had heard any good stories during BayCon, Cafe Manager Michael Wallis said, "Yes, but nothing printable." Later he announced, "By 8 pm tonight we'd given out 100 glowsticks that fans are wearing around the Con. We hope to do the same next year. They're all gone now folks."
  • Room 350-352 - The Artist/Furry Party, sponsored by Yarf! and Dreamcasters Art Guild. Party hostess Monika Livingstone noted, "We're trying to make furry fandom and art fun because ... we like having fun! We decided to have a party at BayCon this year because we couldn't get a display table." The party offered a truly delicious chocolate cake with chocolate chip ice cream! Artwork was out for all to view in one of the two crowded party rooms while vast herds of fans were almost stacked one atop the other to see the 'Pinky and the Brain' cartoons in the other room.
  • In the halls: Jan Price was heard to say, "We are all seeing a different Cricket Fox tonight." (This observer agreed that we saw much MORE of Cricket than in BayCons past. A note to Cricket - sadly the piece of hardware that took the picture of you in costume didn't produce anything that the computer could interpret, unless your self-image is a featureless dark blur.)

    Rick's Watching...

by Rick Hallock Often overlooked, especially by NBC, Amblin's Earth 2 has been cancelled. With just one season worth of episodes, it's unlikely that this show will be repeating anytime soon. The season finale has already aired; however, two episodes of the series were never shown by the network. The first of these is being shown out of order this Sunday night (tonight). If you saw the first few episodes you might have noted a resemblance to Lost In Space, but as the show progressed, character bonds and depth made it an increasingly enjoyable romp. This may be your last chance to see the show. Did I mention NBC renewed SeaQuest, instead? They're gonna' need a bigger boat next season.
