The 17th San Francisco Bay Area Regional Science Fiction & Fantasy Convention

Blade Runner Masked Ball

Saturday night at BayCon 2000, we'll have our traditional Masquerade Ball and Dance. The theme this year for the Masquerade Ball at BayCon is the futuristic vision of Blade Runner. The dark future lit only by neon light, replacants running lose, 1940's styled cops, all rolled up in an oriental techno flavor.

Before and after the parade of costumes there will be dancing to popular music of the past and present. All those attending are invited to join.

Within the Masquerade anything is possible - for example you could be a Unicorn of many colors, a refugee from El5Prime, or an Elf with a vengeance and an M-16. So let your fantasies take you away (please stay within the general rules) and come up with something wild.

For those of you who wish to enter the Masquerade as a contestant, please fill out the entry form provided at the Information Booth on Friday and on Saturday until 1 PM. The costume competition will be informal so if you have never entered a competition the relaxed atmosphere will be perfect for you. Children are welcome to compete.

The competition categories will be:

Best Historical
Best Fantasy
Best Sci Fi
Best Group
Best of Show
Best Workmanship
Best Technical Skill
Best Novice
Children's Costuming

A note for this years costumer, because of the recent remodel of the hotel there are sections of the hotel that have a 7 foot clearance and in one area in the upstairs mezzanine there is a 6 1/2 foot clearance. These areas are directly under chandeliers. The upstairs ballrooms have the same chandeliers but are blessed with higher ceiling so there should be no problem in the Masquerade, but again there is not as much clearance as there has been in the past. So if you have a tall object as part of your costume you may want to make sure you avoid showing it off under or near the chandeliers.
