Regency Dancing

Friday 8:30 PM & Sunday 8:00 PM

In the Bayshore Room

The English Regency (strictly 1811-1820) was the era of Austen, Byron, Shelley, Nelson, and Wellington. It was also the setting of Georgette Heyer and Patrick O'Brien novels, Bernard Cornwell's Sharpe series, and the age of Napoleon. Country Dance was the ballroom dance of the time. The Regency era has had a broad influence on everything from literature to music and dance. Regency Dancing has become a staple of science fiction conventions and fandom.

One of the piquant pleasures of Regency Dancing at the convention is watching the dancers and their costumes. In addition to the many people in T-shirts and jeans, you will see Miss Elizabeth Bennet waltzing with Darth Vader, and Fitzwilliam Darcy dancing with Commander Ivannova.

Even if you have never danced before, with Alan Winston's friendly, clear instruction you will soon be dancing the night away. You needn't bring a partner — we will swap around after every dance. So you have no excuse to not come and try something new.

Swing Dance

Friday Night 9:00 PM — Ballrooms E & F

Instruction from 8-9pm, Dancing `til Rocky Horror starts

If you'd rather dance than gamble or carouse, the BayCon Swing Dance is the place for you! For those of you who need a refresher course, our wonderful Swing instructors, Alex and Liza, will be on hand from 8:00 - 9:00 PM to show you the ropes. At 9:00 PM the dance will get into full swing (pun intended) and continue until we wear out the DJ. Or til midnight, whichever comes first.

Due to space limitations, we request that strollers be left outside the Swing Dance.

Post-Masquerade Dance

Saturday Night Following the Masquerade — Ballrooms E & F

Sometimes, you're not dressed for dinner at Milliways. Sometimes you want to go where everybody knows your name, but no-one will admit that they've seen you. For times like that, there's Quark & Jack's Maidenhead Cantina. Frequently raided, but never closed, this establishment is the foremost watering-hole for those of a piratical bent in all of time and space. So come on in, try the grog, and see if Blackbeard can do the Macarena. The portal opens after the Masquerade competition and closes when the Royal Navy shows up.

Due to space limitations, we request that strollers be left outside the Post-Masquerade Dance.

The Rocky Horror Picture Show

Friday Night 23:59 PM — Ballrooms E & F

Barely Legal is a live cast which performs The Rocky Horror Picture Show every Saturday night at midnight at the Parkway Cinema in Oakland! Barely Legal got their start in Berkeley in 1995, and has been running strong ever since. Barely Legal puts on a very professional show complete with full stage props, incredible performances, exciting pre-shows, and audience participation.

This showing of Rocky Horror Picture Show is NC-17. All members attending must be 17 and older. No exceptions. Be prepared to show photo ID if you are under 30.

Barely Legal has been performing at BayCon for several years and is always glad to be asked back and pleased at the fervor that tends to build in antic-a-pation of the show. While the show is a bit scaled down from their weekly show, it is no less impressive or professional. Barely Legal is one of the most screen accurate casts around. While their home theatre allows many of the traditions of Rocky Horror, please keep in mind the hotel rules should you decide to bring items to their performance. As always there will be virgin sacrifices (those who have never seen Rocky Horror live before), audience participation, and sometimes a few extra surprises.
